1960’s Tippi Hedren “The Birds” Hitchcock Makeup Tutorial

Makeup artist Lisa Eldridge does it again. She’s no stranger to this blogger (she’s featured here quite often!) She comes up with the most creative looks to “redo” on her channel and is faithful to the vintage recreation – never encouraging you to “make it more modern” – as she’s quite a vintage makeup lover herself.

The Birds, while released in 1963, is loosely based on the 1952 story “The Birds” by Daphne du Maurier. This tutorial features bright 50’s blue eyeshadow (I’m always looking for ways to wear blue eyeshadows) and rounded coral nails.

Lisa says:

This tutorial is inspired by Tippi’s make-up in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. The make-up changes subtly throughout the movie, which as I say in the video, may have been deliberate but may also have been a result of the Techicolour film, lighting etc.
For The Birds and Marnie (Hitchcock’s second and last film with Hedren), Hitchcock dictated every aspect of Tippi’s look on and off screen. Hitchcocks vision was meticulously carried out by legendary costume designer Edith Head, Howard Smit on Make-up and Hairdresser Virginia Darcy.

The fact that she even credits the historical makeup, wardrobe and hair team that worked on the movie (she discusses them a lot in the video!) puts her miles away from other youtube makeup gurus. Anyway, on to the tutorial.
