If you’ve never heard of the Melbourne-based Aussie series Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries starring Essie Davis, you’re in for a treat. It’s about a female sleuth sashaying through the back lanes and jazz clubs of late 1920s Melbourne, fighting injustice with her pearl-handled pistol and her dagger-sharp wit. I was sick with the flu back in January and binge-watched it on Netflix. I highly recommend. Of course, I also screen-capped the scenes with her glamorous loungewear, because someone had to. There are only 3 seasons (so far) and every other scene, you’ll see her wearing such fab pieces of lingerie history!
It’s not just Miss Phryne Fisher’s hilarious quips, or the fact that she hides a dagger in her stocking. I loved the costumes! Especially the lovely (seemingly authentic) twenties lingerie. If you’re not watching her budding love affair with Jack (will they? won’t they?) or her bedroom trysts with men half her age, you’re drooling over the silk peignoirs, embroidered kimonos and satiny teddies. Or her saucy Louise Brooks haircut. Or her daily wardrobe. Phryne embodies the happy-go-lucky and fun spirit of the 1920’s.
If you’re looking to build a 20s lingerie wardrobe, or just want a dressing gown (or five), these are the sites I recommend:
Etsy, especially The Pink Purse, unf! and With Love lingerie
Marks & Spencer (especially the 20s inspired Rosie collection, includes silk lingerie sets, cami and French knicker sets, a teddy and a kimono style robe)
What Katie Did (the lingerie section!)
Only Hearts lingerie – on Nordstrom, Dollhouse Bettie, Amazon, Herroom, Shopbop, Journelle
Shell Belle Couture – a luxury British brand
Angela Friedman – an American vintage-inspired lingerie, lounge wear, and corset designer
Hips & Curves – for plus size women, check out this satin & lace teddy!
Layla L’obatti has flapper style collection called Specimens of Seduction, which you can still find at Between the Sheets Lingerie
Kiss Me Deadly
La Perla, Agent Provocateur, and Chantal Thomass sometimes do 20s-themed collections or a few pieces here and there every few years.
This isn’t a comprehensive list, but a few places I would recommend you start your search! What are your favorite 20’s lingerie brands or collections?
