Vintage Longline Bras

Longline bras are very supportive and recommended for women who wear bigger cup sizes. Longline bras are very similar to corsets, but are typically not as ornate. In addition to providing the support of a traditional bra, a longline bra helps to smooth the abs for a shapelier figure. At the same time, longline bras capably mix the grace of a strapless design with the seductive style of a corset, and are highly complementary to evening gowns or formalwear.

Longline bras can be purchased in either full or three quarters length. They can be purchased backless to accentuate a backless dress or in lace to function as seductive lingerie. They’re both shapewear and seduction rolled into one.

Review updated below, as of August 8.

When I first saw this longline bra set when it came out last year, I instantly wanted and lusted after it. What’s not to love? It’s delightfully vintage. It looks like Gossard used their own drawings and prototype from the 1940s and updated it. I also adore longline bras. They give excellent shape and support and I wear them almost exclusively.

A Little Intro

Inspired by Gossard’s own super-sassy 1940′s ‘Ooh la la’ collection, this risqué range embraces true, timeless glamour and over 100 years’ experience of making you look great.

First Impressions

I was kind of disappointed when I pulled this out of the package because it didn’t look like it does in the (above) photo. But, that’s my own darn fault because I didn’t bother to look up non-styled product shots before ordering. I guess I was really excited! In the above shot, this Gossard bra and garter belt set looks as if the fabric is actually a pattern, instead of lace overlay. Still, it’s quite gorgeous. I ordered this bra in “Rose” which is a light  pinky peach color, instead of the “Noir” which looks like black lace over peach. I love the satin band at the bottom, that’s probably my favorite part of the bra! A lot of longline bras don’t bother to make the bottom band cute or decorative, and this one has a chic satin band. The lace is very delicate and special, especially the parts that are unlined (below the cups).

Sizing & Fit

gossard longline bra rose pink ooh la la vintage inspiredI got the bra in my correct size, 36D, although I wish I could have tried this on before ordering. Unfortunately, while it fit, the cut is just not for me. I was dumbfounded when I tried this on. I couldn’t figure out if I ordered the wrong size or not. I know how to measure myself properly for a bra. I’ve done it countless times. I checked and rechecked for all the tell-tale signs that this bra was too big. It fit where it was supposed to fit. The middle was flush against my skin, the band was horizontal to the floor, there was nothing spilling over or chafing, the straps weren’t tight. The band fit me perfectly, but the cups (where the pintucks are) just didn’t sit right on me. They didn’t gape much but they didn’t mould to my body either. They just kind of sat there.gossard longline bra rose pink ooh la la vintage inspired I measured the band and cups with my trusty tape measure and it was almost the same, even a bit smaller, than my other longline bras, so the size couldn’t have been too big. The straps (which are only meant to support about 10% of your breasts) didn’t support me much at all. They were beautiful and stretchy, but at the same time, flimsy.

This bra is boned, but only below the cups and around the sides. The boning is plastic, of course. I found it to be kind of flimsy. It’s the same as you find in every piece of lingerie that’s meant only for the boudoir. I think the problem was that my (heavy) breasts weren’t supported much because the boning is encased in very sheer, delicate lace, causing it to bend a bit. The band at the bottom, which I love, fit well and didn’t stretch at all. However, it did ride up when I wore it for longer than 5 minutes.

The “plunge” part of this plunge bra goes down very deep and my D cup breasts looked even bigger in it. Conclusion? The cut is all wrong for my body shape. Or something… I’ve never had this problem before. I’m thinking I should have ordered the deep suspender belt instead! gossard deep suspender belt vintage lace

I read a couple of customer reviews of this bra and no one else seemed to have the problem I had. They all mentioned that the support was great so maybe it’s just me?

Other Notes

Material doesn’t really “breathe” well. Probably because it’s mostly polyester. I’ve washed it gently by hand with mild soap and it held up well.

Garment Information: 51% Polyester, 35% Polyamide, 11% Cotton, 3% Elastane. Exclusive of trims.

Pros: beautiful material, made up to GG cup, supportive enough for most ladies

Cons: may not support bigger busts

Review Summary

Unfortunately, this bra is clearly only for pin-up style photo shoots or bedroom wowing. In my opinion, it’s not an everyday bra. It’s too delicate for that. I tried wearing it a full day (in the summer heat) and boy, that was a mistake. The lace is so beautiful, I’d wear it as bridal or special occasion lingerie only. If you order this bra, make extra sure you’re ordering the correct size. Ask for measurements and compare it to a bra you have that fits you perfectly. And be aware that this bra is made to look like a longline bra, but probably won’t support (bigger cup ladies) like one should.

*Disclaimer: Lingerie Please has kindly provided me this bra for reviewing purposes. I don’t work for them and this review is my real, not paid for, opinion. They ship quickly and communication was prompt, friendly and helpful. They have an excellent selection of Gossard Lingerie items and I will be ordering from them again in the future!

Are you an expert in bra fitting? Could you tell me if the size was too big, small, or perhaps the cut just wasn’t right for me? Comment below and let me know! I’d love to hear from you.

Today (8/8) I decided to try this bra again. I wasn’t satisfied with the way I left my review.

Here’s my update:

I get more support if I wear the straps closer to my neck, like a halter or racerback, instead of far apart on my shoulders. I don’t know why that is, but it’s something I noticed today. It looks really nice under this floral halterneck dress I’m wearing. Another thing is the cups don’t pucker out on the sides much anymore, and I attribute this to the gentle washing I did. Maybe it relaxed the resistance of the cups a bit? It does look much better than it did when I wore it out the first time.

Although, the band at the bottom still rides up. I hate that, grr.. And I still don’t recommend wearing it out if your summer is as hot as it is here! Lace and summer just don’t mix, in my book.

After reading through buyer reviews and conducting my own review on M&S longline bras, it seems that the cups tend to run on the larger side! Also, when the description says “added stretch”, which M&S writes on a lot of their bras meant for comfort, it actually means (to me) to order a size down in the band! This fabric will stretch quite a bit. Take that into consideration.

Beautiful Vintage-style glamour

“I’ve trawled the net and it’s so hard to get classic vintage-style underwear which is actually good quality, affordable and fits. I ordered one of these bras, and when it arrived and I had tried it on I ordered 2 more! Gives a great shape, sexy and really comfy for everyday wear.” – Marks & Spencer customer

My notes:

At first glance, I figured the model was wearing a white bra underneath this one because it was see-through lace. Now that I’ve had a closer look, it looks like this bra is padded (as it says up there in the product details). It’s probably to keep the lace from chafing, I just wonder why they didn’t make the padding black instead of nude/white?

Marks & Spencer Limited Collection Vintage Style Spot Longline Bra

I ordered this very affordable Marks and Spencer Limited Collection Vintage Style Spot Longline bra about a month ago when it was first featured on their website. They didn’t have such a selection of longline bras at the time, but they do now! It seems like they’ve added more longline style bras since the last time I checked.

A Little Intro

The Vintage Style Spot Longline bra from Marks & Spencer is “fun and fabulous” and this vintage style longline bra is part of the M&S Limited Collection of lingerie, which is “fashionable, contemporary lingerie in the latest prints, colours and shapes.” What the limited collection means is that it’s available for a limited time, which I’m guessing means when they’ve sold out of their stock, they won’t bring it back! If you like it, you’d better snatch it up before it sells out in your size.

Color & Style

This bra is available in two colors; black mix and green mix. I bought the black mix, although I’m thinking I want to buy the green mix as well. It’s a gorgeous turquoise color and I don’t have many lingerie pieces in green! If you’ve read some of my older posts, I may have mentioned that I despise polka dots/spot print. Well, I still do. But I loved the cut of this longline bra so I was willing to overlook my hatred of polka dot/spot print. The little buttons, pink bows and especially the piping and white lace scallop trim added to this bra is very pretty and drew my attention.

Sizing & Fit

I bought this bra in a UK size 38D. In US sizes, that’s a 38C. In European sizes, that’s an 85D. I wanted this bra to fit well and there were no reviews on the fit (whether it ran large, small or true to size) when I bought it. I normally fit around around a 38C-36D, depending on manufacturer. That said, this bra runs a little larger. I think it’s because it features “added stretch”. I didn’t notice, but it says so under the “Product Details”. Oops! Does it stretch considerably? Yes! So you’re free to even order a size down than you normally wear, which I think I should have done. I think the “added stretch” is due to the band material (which is a stretchy black mesh) and the overall 5% elastene content.

M&S Vintage Style Spot Longline Bra in Green Mix

The Form & Cut

Although it’s a longline bra, I believe the cups would be considered a “full cup” style. A full cup bra gives great support and is a great choice for women who wear bigger cup sizes. The full cup and firm fit enables good bust control giving you more security and comfort. The straps on this style of bra are slightly wider and are positioned more centrally than other bras to give better uplift and comfort. This style of bra is ideal for everyday wear, giving a natural look when worn with most high cut tops and shirts, which is exactly what I was looking for in my quest for a good longline bra. Indeed, this bra is extremely comfortable to wear. I’ve worn it 3x a week for work, for 10 hours each time!

Besides the added stretch, the only other issue I had with the cut and fit of the Vintage Style Spot Longline bra was in the cups. The cups feature a scallop trim in white lace and I can see the top seams when I wear thin tops. I actually don’t mind it, I like the shape of the seam. It looks almost as if I’m wearing a sexy bustier or mini corset under my clothes. (I think a longline bra is sort of a “training bra” for a corset anyway.)

What I don’t like is the baggy fit at the top of the cups. Again, I didn’t notice when I bought it, but you can actually see an example of this when you look at the photo of the model wearing it. It’s not noticeable when you’re wearing a top, but when you put the bra on and look down, the bagginess is definitely apparent. I’m not sure a smaller size would help.

The M&S Vintage Style Spot Longline bra features padding in the cups, but not too much. It’s enough to hold the shape of the bra but not enough to make you look a size bigger.

Other Notes

This bra is hard to get on! There are 7 sets of hook and eye fastenings at the back so it takes a bit longer to do them up. I have to hook it around my front first, then turn it around and pull it up. I think that’s the most efficient way to put on this bra, as well as other longline style bras (assuming you don’t have anyone else around to help you!). Also, M&S doesn’t mention it, but there is (almost unnoticeable plastic) boning in this bra on the sides, which is excellent because it keeps the form all the way around and smooths down any flabbiness at your sides. This creates a very sexy hourglass shape and I have turned some heads while wearing it! No one can tell why, but I definitely noticed that I look shapelier when I wear this bra. There’s more definition in my underbust and upper abs/ribcage area.

Review Summary

Pros:

Great material, light & comfy boning, stretchy, nice cut, also comes in green! Good price for a longline bra (£18.00/approx. $29 USD, at the time of this review).

Cons:

Runs slightly large, cups are a little baggy at the top, make sure you get the right size! (Sizes in M&S are for the UK market, which is different than US sizes!)

Vintage lingerie designer Kiss Me Deadly has just released a new line of gorgeous retro lingerie, inspired by prints and vintage clothing from the 1940′s – 1950′s. Seductive and empowering, this lingerie is for women who are not afraid to express their femininity.

The retro Candy Box print is flirty, girly and just plain fun! (When was the last time you saw a garter belt with cupcakes on it?!) The garter belt can be worn with the matching bra and knickers or with a plain black bra – preferably a bullet bra for a more altogether retro look!

The Cherie Teddy, in satin and lace can be worn as loungewear or nightwear. An ideal romantic gift for a special occasion. (And it’s a real dupe of the M&S teddie that was featured in my Jean Harlow lingerie post – which has since sold out!)

(Psst, if you were wondering, the models are wearing the garter belts with stockings by Cervin, which by the way – are the same stockings sold by Agent Provocateur – not many people know that little fact.)

The new Kiss me Deadly collection is available at Aussie site Sweet Pins (yes, they ship worldwide!)

If it’s sold out on Sweet Pins, you can buy Kiss Me Deadly at My Tights.

Kiss Me Deadly is a small vintage inspired lingerie line, designed by Catherine Clavering. Catherine will tell you that she ‘went on a long search for a good suspender belt set and ended up with a vintage inspired retro lingerie brand designed for femme fatales; glamorous, sensual and intelligent women with just a hint of danger.’

Many of Catherine’s designs are limited edition releases, so with limited numbers, they sell out fast. The next limited edition release, is the Alouette in Electric Blue, which comprises of a padded plunge bra, briefs and a 6 strap cincher.

This Limited Edition is due for release in early December and available for delivery in plenty of time for Christmas, so if you want to treat yourself, or those men out their looking for the ideal Christmas present then why not pre-order the Kiss Me Deadly Alouette Bra, Briefs and Cincher.

This gorgeous new set is in Electric Blue, with previous years versions being in peach and the top selling emerald green of two years ago. It was only natural that Kiss Me Deadly would return to this fantastically designed set, with a color that can only be described as stunning. This years set has a Cincher, that is longline and therefore slightly longer than the normal cincher.

As six strap suspender belts, with metal clips, is really the thing that Kiss Me Deadly do best, the Alouette Longline Cincher is that something a little extra special for anyone wanting to achieve that vintage look with a modern take.

Kiss Me Deadly six strap suspender belts combine superb staying power with both comfort and glamour. Often deep, like vintage styles, they suit retro 40′s and 50′s trends, which other mainstream labels are starting to copy, with this trend continuing strongly in to Spring/Summer 2011. The belts sitting on the natural waist, the slimmest part of your body, means a Kiss Me Deadly suspender belt won’t slide about, and looks fabulous – think Dita Von Teese. It also means that the belt can safely accommodate wide straps, better for all day hold.

Kiss Me Deadly always use metal garter tabs, which survive washing and work better than plastic, with the range of garments offered by Kiss Me Deadly now including, roll on girdles, corselettes, basques, suspender skirts and longline girdles which all feature 6 garter tabs, the better to keep seamed nylons in place!

Lingerie retailer Be Cheeky got inspired by Vintage Lingerie and have added a new (and still growing!) section on their website for Vintage inspired lingerie.

From their blog:

Corsets and basques are becoming big news again as the UK looks to past times for “comfort”. Fashion commentators believe that as we are pulling out of the hard times a recession brings, its common to look back at times gone by for emotional security. With the huge rise in Vintage fashion being so apparent this year, we’re not at all surprised to see sales of corsets and basques begin to fly.

Anyone visiting Vintage at Goodwood this year (it was AMAZING!) will have seen all the 50′s beauties in their stunning swimsuits posing for photos and floral dresses up to their elbows in cup cakes and vintage tea pots. I’ll post some of our photos below… There are also a number of films with the starring female ribboned into beautiful figure enhancing corsets – like Megan Fox in her new film for example.

We were surprised – but delighted – however, to see corsets cross over into the furniture industry. Look what we clocked today whilst flicking through a copy of the V&A Magazine.

I fell in love with this Ooh La La Longline bra by Gossard. The Ooh La La collection is inspired by Gossard’s own super-sassy 1940′s “ooh la la” collection, this risqué range embraces true, timeless glamour and over 100 years experience of making you look great.

A dash of Parisian perfection playfully tips its hat to our heritage whilst encapsulating the latest cutting-edge fashion trends.
