Betty Draper strips down in Mad Men‘s season 1, episode 5 to a gorgeous white bra slip. What’s a bra slip, you may ask? Now I’m sure you know what a bra is and what a slip is, so a bra + a slip = a bra slip! You’ll usually find them today under the name “Shaping slips” or in the Bridal lingerie and/or Shapewear section of lingerie shops (and websites).

Bra slips are made for wearing under dresses like a normal slip, but these feature support in the bust. The bust uplift cups (on all-in-one corselettes) were first introduced in 1933, but did not become common until 1943. Modern bra slips or “Shaping slips” as Maidenform and others began calling them in 1975, are tight, clingy (think Spanx) and much, much shorter than their vintage counterparts (like Betty’s below).

Betty Draper could also be wearing an all-in-one corselette or girdle slip under a long half slip. Or a torsolette/basque with a long half slip over it. I’m not a fashion student, so let’s just say she’s wearing a bra slip.

Bra slips were a sixties hit for short skimpy dresses. This new hybrid was an underwired cleavage bra with a short mini nylon slip all in one. Tights, panties, bra slip and your dress on top and that was it. In the early 21st century the bra slip made a reappearance in stores such as Marks and Spencer.

Why Wear a Bra Slip or For Which Occasion Should You Wear a Bra Slip?

Women commonly wear a bra slip under a dress which is too revealing or too tight for normal underwear. Many times a shear dress or a dress made of light or thin fabric will show the lines of a normal bra and panty set. Since the bra slip is one piece, there are no lines to show through the dress. I believe Betty was wearing a pretty white formal dress in this Mad Men episode, hence the need for a bra slip.

Where to Buy a Bra Slip

I spent some time researching where to get a true bra slip, instead of a fashionable chemise and found this beautiful shaping slip by Body Wrap.

It’s a little costly right now, at $78, but BareNecessities is having a Friends & Family sale (I love those!) which gives you 25% off with the coupon code, which you can find on their site.

If you’re looking for something a little more traditional, there’s the Miss Mary Bra Slip found on Simply Yours. (Miss Mary is a Swedish lingerie company, started in 1959).

The Charnos Multiway Bra Slip is a blush nude version of Betty’s (comes in black too). I’m in love with the lace cups. They do come with straps if you need them, but they look like they can hold on their own.

Mad Men Betty Draper Crinoline Petticoat Dress

I think I saw this question in a forum recently. And the answer is: she’s wearing a crinoline petticoat. It adds fullness to skirts and dresses without the aid of underframing or boning.

In the 1950′s, rustling crinolines to fill out full-skirted dresses were all the rage (poodle skirts, anyone?). Nowadays, it’s mainly seen in the bridal and formal market (prom dresses). For her first solo collection, fashion designer Vivienne Westwood looked to the crinoline for inspiration. The collection, titled Mini Crini, featured shorter crinoline skirts with more flexible plastic hoops.

The crinoline is also used in costuming, especially square dance, can-can and national dress – and of course by vintage enthusiasts!!

Secrets in Lace has an abundance of these on their site, in Curvy Woman sizes as well as standard sizes. There are three fine quality soft chiffon styles. They’re beautiful and often featured with contrasting trim!

A Little History About These Swanky Wall Clocks

After World War II, design evolved from Art Deco and Streamline Moderne to Mid-century Modern, which reigned from the mid-1940s until the mid-1960s. No corner of the home was untouched by this new, casual, atomic-era aesthetic, including furnishings and accessories such as clocks.

Mad Men Office Clock (Behind Joan)

The hint of timepieces to come began in the late 1930s, when the Glo-Dial Clock Corporation of Los Angeles began producing neon-illuminated clocks for business such as bars and garages. Most of these early Glo-Dials had neon behind the clock’s round frame to illuminate the dial (thus the company’s name), but later models had an additional ring of neon on the outside, too.

George Nelson was undoubtedly the most influential clock designer of the period. When he wasn’t designing furniture for Herman Miller Corporation he was working with the Howard Miller Clock Co. on a series of marvelous modern wall clocks. He made clocks whose hands pointed to colored balls on the ends of slender shafts; clocks that resembled sunbursts, sunflowers, and asterisks; and even a clock that suggested a human eye.

Nelson had countless imitators, from Seth Thomas to Elgin to Lux to Westclox, although for many contemporary collectors, these vintage Mid-century Modern clocks are every bit as desirable. For example, Seth Thomas made a wall clock with Roman numerals on its face and radiating metal spokes alternating with wooden fans.

Westclox also made sunbursts and starbursts, as these mid-century clocks are variously known, one of which had 48 spokes—some were made of brass and capped with wooden balls, others were solid wood and fashioned in the shape of menacing spikes. Elgin used teak and brass for its spokes, while Lux put flowers at the ends of theirs, creating so-called “atomic daisies.” The faces of Lux clocks were also arresting—the dial of one design resembled a 1960s Pop Art red-and-orange bulls-eye.

Betty Draper’s style is perfectly coiffed and adorned. Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant describes Betty’s look as “… quite simple but so gorgeous. And you know, you still see women like this. That beautiful classic style from the period that they’ve carried on for their entire lives…”

Betty Draper definitely takes inspiration from Grace Kelly. To get her look just right, you’ll need a petticoat to get the skirt of your dress to flare out full-circle.
