lace lingerie

I recently purchased a “corset” (against my better judgement.. haha) from TinyDeal. This website specializes in cheap everything direct from China at wholesale prices. I bought a “corset” for around $17 (with free int’l shipping) and it arrived in less than two weeks. I was shocked it came so fast, usually packages coming from China take at least 3 weeks before they arrive. I paid with Paypal, just in case.

This is what it looks like:

Floral Print Women Bustier Panty Set
$18.07

I read as many reviews as I could find (most of them in other languages, so I had to use google translate) and all of the customers were happy with their purchases. This photo, by the way, is a complete rip-off of What Katie Did‘s Lace Laurie Corset. The corset isn’t the same quality AT ALL and not to be confused with the quality of What Katie Did. I just bought it because I liked the look.

This is what this cheap imitation looks like:

And this is what it looks like on me:

(Sorry for the bad quality photos, I took these with my camera phone and lightened them a bit.)

Do you see how the busk is rigid and the buttons point at a strange angle? That’s not because the size is wrong but because of the cheap materials used. The metal “buttons” are very cheap and angle out. On a real corset, that’s meant to be worn and conform to the body, this would not happen. The busk would stay closed and not overlap, gap or be mismatched. This cheap corset comes with two sets of ribbon laces in the back which I immediately switched out to heavy duty ones meant for real corsets.

Since I have a natural hourglass figure, I could easily lace down at least 4 inches. That’s not possible with this “corset”, no matter how much breaking in I do. I don’t believe this would conform to my shape due to the cheap material. That said, I do recommend this cheap corset for a few things:

Recommended use

  • Costume parties
  • Boudoir wowing
  • Burlesque acts
  • Pin Up Shoots
  • Clubbing

Not recommended for

  • Tightlacing (or any sort of reduction)
  • Those looking for a real corset
  • What Katie Did employees? LOL

So all in all, I spent less than $20 bucks and got myself a bustier that looks nice and nothing more. To be honest, I think I’ll order a few more as they’re so cheap, I don’t have much to lose. I honestly expected a lot worse (loose threads, cheaper fabric, even cheaper plastic boning) but it’s better than what I expected, for sure. Thanks for reading!

Review updated below, as of August 8.

When I first saw this longline bra set when it came out last year, I instantly wanted and lusted after it. What’s not to love? It’s delightfully vintage. It looks like Gossard used their own drawings and prototype from the 1940s and updated it. I also adore longline bras. They give excellent shape and support and I wear them almost exclusively.

A Little Intro

Inspired by Gossard’s own super-sassy 1940′s ‘Ooh la la’ collection, this risqué range embraces true, timeless glamour and over 100 years’ experience of making you look great.

  • Delicate Lace
  • Wide Retro Underband
  • Vintage Bow Detail
  • 3/4 cup, padded, plunge bra

First Impressions

I was kind of disappointed when I pulled this out of the package because it didn’t look like it does in the (above) photo. But, that’s my own darn fault because I didn’t bother to look up non-styled product shots before ordering. I guess I was really excited! In the above shot, this Gossard bra and garter belt set looks as if the fabric is actually a pattern, instead of lace overlay. Still, it’s quite gorgeous. I ordered this bra in “Rose” which is a light  pinky peach color, instead of the “Noir” which looks like black lace over peach. I love the satin band at the bottom, that’s probably my favorite part of the bra! A lot of longline bras don’t bother to make the bottom band cute or decorative, and this one has a chic satin band. The lace is very delicate and special, especially the parts that are unlined (below the cups).

Sizing & Fit

I got the bra in my correct size, 36D, although I wish I could have tried this on before ordering. Unfortunately, while it fit, the cut is just not for me. I was dumbfounded when I tried this on. I couldn’t figure out if I ordered the wrong size or not. I know how to measure myself properly for a bra. I’ve done it countless times. I checked and rechecked for all the tell-tale signs that this bra was too big. It fit where it was supposed to fit. The middle was flush against my skin, the band was horizontal to the floor, there was nothing spilling over or chafing, the straps weren’t tight. The band fit me perfectly, but the cups (where the pintucks are) just didn’t sit right on me. They didn’t gape much but they didn’t mould to my body either. They just kind of sat there. I measured the band and cups with my trusty tape measure and it was almost the same, even a bit smaller, than my other longline bras, so the size couldn’t have been too big. The straps (which are only meant to support about 10% of your breasts) didn’t support me much at all. They were beautiful and stretchy, but at the same time, flimsy.

This bra is boned, but only below the cups and around the sides. The boning is plastic, of course. I found it to be kind of flimsy. It’s the same as you find in every piece of lingerie that’s meant only for the boudoir. I think the problem was that my (heavy) breasts weren’t supported much because the boning is encased in very sheer, delicate lace, causing it to bend a bit. The band at the bottom, which I love, fit well and didn’t stretch at all. However, it did ride up when I wore it for longer than 5 minutes.

The “plunge” part of this plunge bra goes down very deep and my D cup breasts looked even bigger in it. Conclusion? The cut is all wrong for my body shape. Or something… I’ve never had this problem before. I’m thinking I should have ordered the deep suspender belt instead!

I read a couple of customer reviews of this bra and no one else seemed to have the problem I had. They all mentioned that the support was great so maybe it’s just me?

Other Notes

Material doesn’t really “breathe” well. Probably because it’s mostly polyester. I’ve washed it gently by hand with mild soap and it held up well.

Garment Information: 51% Polyester, 35% Polyamide, 11% Cotton, 3% Elastane. Exclusive of trims.

Pros: beautiful material, made up to GG cup, supportive enough for most ladies

Cons: may not support bigger busts

Review Summary

Unfortunately, this bra is clearly only for pin-up style photo shoots or bedroom wowing. In my opinion, it’s not an everyday bra. It’s too delicate for that. I tried wearing it a full day (in the summer heat) and boy, that was a mistake. The lace is so beautiful, I’d wear it as bridal or special occasion lingerie only. If you order this bra, make extra sure you’re ordering the correct size. Ask for measurements and compare it to a bra you have that fits you perfectly. And be aware that this bra is made to look like a longline bra, but probably won’t support (bigger cup ladies) like one should.

*Disclaimer: Lingerie Please has kindly provided me this bra for reviewing purposes. I don’t work for them and this review is my real, not paid for, opinion. They ship quickly and communication was prompt, friendly and helpful. They have an excellent selection of Gossard Lingerie items and I will be ordering from them again in the future!

Are you an expert in bra fitting? Could you tell me if the size was too big, small, or perhaps the cut just wasn’t right for me? Comment below and let me know! I’d love to hear from you.

Today (8/8) I decided to try this bra again. I wasn’t satisfied with the way I left my review.

Here’s my update:

I get more support if I wear the straps closer to my neck, like a halter or racerback, instead of far apart on my shoulders. I don’t know why that is, but it’s something I noticed today. It looks really nice under this floral halterneck dress I’m wearing. Another thing is the cups don’t pucker out on the sides much anymore, and I attribute this to the gentle washing I did. Maybe it relaxed the resistance of the cups a bit? It does look much better than it did when I wore it out the first time.

Although, the band at the bottom still rides up. I hate that, grr.. And I still don’t recommend wearing it out if your summer is as hot as it is here! Lace and summer just don’t mix, in my book.

Autograph Essentials Rose Lace Padded Longline Bra

Elegant and feminine, this longline bra has a rose lace design. Gentle padding and underwiring give a flattering uplifted shape. Sophisticated, modern glamour.

  • Fob and seam feature
  • Longline

After reading through buyer reviews and conducting my own review on M&S longline bras, it seems that the cups tend to run on the larger side! Also, when the description says “added stretch”, which M&S writes on a lot of their bras meant for comfort, it actually means (to me) to order a size down in the band! This fabric will stretch quite a bit. Take that into consideration.

Read What Buyers Had to Say

Beautiful Vintage-style glamour

“I’ve trawled the net and it’s so hard to get classic vintage-style underwear which is actually good quality, affordable and fits. I ordered one of these bras, and when it arrived and I had tried it on I ordered 2 more! Gives a great shape, sexy and really comfy for everyday wear.” – Marks & Spencer customer

Autograph Essentials longline Bra

“Beautiful design, however the bras is massive I should have got at least a back size and a cup size down, the cup size is on the large side too. Perfect fit, elegant design!” – Marks & Spencer customer

“Looks classy and elegant, fabric feels good on the skin. A beautiful design and perfect fit makes this definitely a recommended buy ! Would be nice if this bra also comes in white or cream.” – Marks & Spencer customer

My notes:

At first glance, I figured the model was wearing a white bra underneath this one because it was see-through lace. Now that I’ve had a closer look, it looks like this bra is padded (as it says up there in the product details). It’s probably to keep the lace from chafing, I just wonder why they didn’t make the padding black instead of nude/white?

If you’ve seen X-Men: First Class, you’d know there’s a groovy lingerie scene in the Hell Fire Club featuring January Jones as Emma Frost . The movie takes place in the early 60s and you’ll see nylon 60s babydolls, lingerie with fringe, garter belt sets, and not a thong in sight! Our beloved Betty Draper as Emma Frost wears a sparkly white Wonderbra-looking plunge bra, skirt and fur trimmed peignoir. I spent a while searching online for this part of the movie but since nobody uploaded the clip to youtube, I figured I’d be the first to do it! The scene also features pieces from vintage inspired lingerie brand What Katie Did‘s Lulu collection. Can you spot it?

I’ll give you a hint.

Okay, so perhaps your favorite lingerie period is not the 20s, 30s, 40s or 50s. Maybe you’re more interested in the earlier easy but feminine look of the Edwardian era, where corsets are S-curved and free flowing, low cut cotton chemises and bloomers are in. And if you happen to be plus sized, not to worry – Hips & Curves has got your ass covered! (quite literally, hehe) The Edwardian era was ideal for women with full chests and curvy hips.

Edwardian Cotton & Lace Chemise – For Cosplay or Comfortable Sleepwear

This Edwardian chemise is comfort with a hint of vintage chic. Made of soft cotton fabric, delicately pin-tucked with a touch of lace trim. Button up front lets you reveal as much or as little cleavage as you like. Wear it to sleep or to seduce!  This chemise is a perfect piece of comfortable sleepwear on its own, and has a devastatingly gorgeous look when paired with a sexy underbust corset and thigh-high stockings. Sizes 1X-4X.

Edwardian Cotton & Lace Camisole

Comfort, versatility and sex appeal – what more could a girl want? This camisole is vintage chic at its best! Soft and sexy Edwardian style cotton camisole has lace trim detail and delicate pin-tucking. Camisole has a button up front and ruffle hem. Wear to bed with matching Edwardian bloomers, or with jeans and a sexy underbust corset. Sizes 1x-4x.

What Katie Did has just launched their new Spring/Summer 2011 range, Vicky! Modeled by the one and only modern pin up girl Bernie Dexter. The new What Katie Did Vicky collection is classically beautiful lingerie, made from semi-sheer black floral lace, layered over fine organza. It’s pure class.

Katie says:

Our Spring/Summer 2011 collection has just been launched. We hope you like ‘Vicky’ a romantic range in sheer pink and black lace as much as we do!

Oh, I do! I do!

What inspired Katie’s new design? The What Katie Did boutique manageress Vicky!

The New What Katie Did Vicky Bra

This new deliciously sheer balcony bra means business! Just like its raven-haired namesake, it’s strikingly beautiful, with just a hint of darker mystery!

Created from an intricately patterned, black floral lace, layered over delicate organza, Vicky is trimmed with pale pink satin ribbon along the tops of the bra cups. The design is a slightly new take on What Katie Did’s classic balconette, with underwiring and strategic seaming across the cups, to lift, support and separate the breasts for a truly alluring décolletage.

The New What Katie Did Vicky Panty

This panty knicker is a tantalising, semi-sheer version of What Katie Did’s bikini-style knickers, a cut that’s popular with Sixties fans as well as those retro girls who have an aversion to high cut granny panties!

These Vicky knickers are made from stretchy powermesh that gives light shaping at the sides and back, and a high cut that flatters and elongates your legs. The tummy panel is fashioned from non-stretch, black floral lace, layered over organza and trimmed with pink satin ribbon down the sides, with a cheeky strip right in the middle! This shallower style of knickers is just the thing for wearing under lower-cut skirts and trousers.

The New What Katie Did Vicky Suspender/Garter Belt – My Favorite Piece!

Could there be a more elegant a way to keep your stockings in place?

Named after their London boutique manager and all-round vintage vixen, Vicky, this enticing little number is made from panels of saucy, semi-sheer black lace and organza, with an intricate floral pattern.

Each panel is trimmed with delicate ribbon, and the non-stretch construction means it’s lightly shaping across the tummy and thighs; and highly flattering on a range of shapes and sizes. It’s finished with a hint of powermesh at the back, for a perfect fit, and features six of What Katie Did infallible, metal suspender clips. I dare you to resist this new garter belt!

By the way, ladies, that’s not all! There’s more at the website! A new swimwear collection and satin shapewear collection! Check it out and tell me what you think.

What makes Triumph Lingerie so special?

You’ve likely heard of the British lingerie brand Triumph. They’re quite possibly the world’s biggest lingerie manufacturer. Comfort, quality, innovation and fashion are Triumph’s core values. I normally buy Triumph bras when I want something comfortable and well made, like maybe a T-shirt bra. But when I saw this new shapewear collection – I was grinning from ear to ear! Triumph does have an extensive range encompassing everyday lingerie, specific shapewear, sports and maternity styles and it’s true that you will find great fit, color and style within Triumph’s vast range – but this new vintage inspired collection is to die for! Thumbs up, Triumph lingerie! Keep it coming and I’ll keep buying!

Triumph Shape Sensation Series

Since I’m not sure you can get this yet, I also want to mention the Shape Sensation series, which employs ultra-light elasticized fabrics to give wearers what the manufacturer calls a “shaping effect”.

“It’s not a slimming product. It’s about shaping the body,” said Emilie Kauffmann, brand and marketing manager for Triumph in France.

The new collection consists of four ranges:

Elegant Sensation seeks to offer a high level of shaping with a ‘sophisticated light look,’ using an abstract-patterned lace, which has been designed exclusively for Triumph.
Pure Sensation offers medium-level shaping with a combination of sheer and opaque materials, and flat engineered edges.
Alluring Sensation gives medium to high control in a ‘sexy retro optic’.
Velvet Sensation provides medium control, using flock technology in a floral design, featuring the season’s colors.

I’m confident that lingerie website Zodee will have the new Triumph Essence collection available soon, since they already have every other Triumph collection, including Shape Sensation, available on their site! All of these vintage inspired items are on Triumph’s website! Check it out!
