Vintage Clothing

Vintage clothing is a generic term for new or second hand garments originating from a previous era. The phrase is also used in connection with a retail outlet, e.g. “vintage clothing store.”
Generally speaking, clothing which was produced before the 1920s is referred to as antique clothing and clothing from the 1920s to 1960s is considered vintage. Retro, short for retrospective, or “vintage style” usually refers to clothing that imitates the style of a previous era. Reproduction, or repro, clothing is a newly-made but faithful copy of an older garment. Clothing produced more recently is usually called modern or contemporary fashion. Opinions vary on these definitions.
Most vintage clothing has been previously worn, but a small percentage of pieces have not. These are often old warehouse stock, and more valuable than those that have been worn, especially if they have their original tags. Referred to as deadstock or new old stock (NOS), they nevertheless sometimes have flaws.

I admit my opinion isn’t really a popular one and I thought about it a lot before writing this review. Bettie Page clothing has some gorgeous designs (and some that make me want to give them the side-eye) but they’re not one of my favorite vintage inspired clothing brands. I’ve only made one order from them (a skirt). Here’s why:

1. Ridiculous Prices
2. Bad Quality Fabrics
3. Weird Sizing

I have nothing against Bettie Page Clothing, I just wasn’t thrilled with my first (and only) purchase. I will say that their shipping service was quick and easy though.

Ridiculous Prices

I understand vintage inspired clothing is a niche market. Therefore, retail prices will reflect that. However, I think they overcharge for what you get. And even with a huge discount, (sometimes up to 70% off) I still haven’t been swayed to make another purchase.

Bad Quality Fabrics

It wasn’t horrible costume-store quality, but I expected much better than what I received. The fabric felt kinda cheap, not what I expected for a $50+ skirt! Since my first order, I now look at their catalog with a bit more thought. And that thought is “I bet that fabric is the cheapest ever. Would I still buy it at that price?”

Weird Sizing

I read some other reviews of Bettie Page Clothing and was advised to size up – TWICE. I believe they only go up to a size 4XL so if you’re a 2XL (a size US 14/16?) you’re SOL with most things on the site. I notice that the larger sizes tend to sell out twice as fast. Good luck, ladies.

Maybe that particular skirt wasn’t up to snuff, but I doubt I’ll be placing any more orders to find out if it was just a one time thing.

It actually has good reviews too, so they’re not just marking it down because no one wants it ;o) It’s not exactly a summer dress, but for work in an air conditioned office? I’d wear it. Nautical flavorings are this seasons big trend, so here’s the ultimate Retro Fifties ‘Sailor Girl’ look, from Bettie Page!

There is a lot of different Nautical themed styles around, but I think Bettie Page’s ‘Captain’ Dress is just perfect! Retro Fifties style pencil Dress in Navy Blue with White trim. Double breasted buttons feature, with zip fasten on reverse. Fitted bodice with pencil skirt, center vent to reverse of skirt. Retro Sailor folded collar with white satin trim. Thin white belt to finish it all off. Fantastic Retro Clothing from Bettie Page.

‘Gossip Girl’ fans may recognize this dress as the one worn by Leighton Meister, AKA Blair Waldorf! (She wears a customized shortened length version of this Bettie Page classic dress!)

What’s the only problem with this dress? The ridiculous price! If you like the “premium” version of this dress – then by all means, buy it. You can get it at Atom Retro for $151.46.

But I’ll be ordering a cheaper replica from Chic Star.
